Giro D’Italia: Filippo Ganna wen phase 5

Mileto: The irresistible form of Filippo Ganna continued as the young Italian power station added an everyday Grand Tour road tour to its name after its recent victories in the time trial in the World Championship and the opening stages of the Giro d’Italia.

Ganna was not happy with a maglia rosa on the first day of his girlfriend Giro on top of his rainbow sweater from Imola, but on Wednesday added the Giro’s maglia azzurra to his expanding wardrobe by showcasing his uphill ability during the dark and misty decisive climb in Phase 5 of the race where he laid the foundation for an emotional victory that eased the pressure of Ineos Grenadiers after the withdrawal of team leader Geraint Thomas.

As part of an initial eight-man breakaway in the 225km shift through the rolling hills of Calabria, Ganna escaped on the last climb of his fellow escapees before taking a two-man chase and the returning peloton on the wet and slippery descent to the finish in Camigliatello Silano.

Ganna’s eighth professional victory was the 24-year-old’s first triumphant run outside his favorite time trial discipline and came on stage with a whopping 4,700 meters of climbing and almost a piece of flat road.
