Sharjah: Starting batsman Shikhar Dhawan (101) saved a number of times through the fielders and hit his first IPL century, while Axar Patel pulled off three sixes in the final as Delhi Capitals moved to the top of the table with a tense victory of five wickets Chennai Super Kings, Saturday here.
Apart from 25 and 79, apart from surviving a half chance and a run-out chance, Dhawan took full advantage of the lives given to him to collect his best IPL beat, as the capitals had a solid 180- run target refurbished with one ear. At 99, Dhawan also reversed a backward decision using DRS.
Despite a well-tuned Dhawan, Sam Curran bowled an exceptional 19th over and gave up just four runs to keep CSK in the hunt. Capitals needed 17 runs from the final and it looked like Dhawan’s attempt could go in vain, but Axar Patel played a blind from a knockout and beat Ravindra Jadeja by three sixes to end the match in style.
DC now has 14 points from nine games, one more than Mumbai Indians (12). Dhawan took 58 balls for his unbeaten beat which was hit with 14 strokes and one over it.
Earlier, Faf Du Plessis scored his fourth half of the season before Ambati Rayudu yielded another useful cameo as the Chennai Super Kings made a combined batting effort to move 179 for four. Du Plessis (58) added 87 runs with Shane Watson (36) after the early fall of Sam Curran (0), who set it up well for the CSK. Rayudu hit 45 off 25 balls while Ravindra Jadeja hit four sixes in his fiery 33-run run. One of Jadeja’s sixes ends up on the road outside the stadium.
